The Purple Pileus is an adaptation of an 1896 short story by H. G. Wells by the same title that explores gender roles and dynamics in a conservative, almost archaic household in the 1950's. Finding himself in a less-than-perfect marriage to a girl who could be his daughter, Jim Coombes desperately searches for a solution to his marital problems and attempts to regain respect in his own household. His growing resentment and bitterness do little to help, but ends up pushing him towards an unexpected remedy that is both ironic and disturbing in nature. Visit the website for more information:
Madness Trilogy

The first of the trilogy, tentatively titled "De(con)struction", I will shoot over the Fall Break, and is about a graffiti artist (loosely based on the real-life graffiti artist Banksy), who struggles internally with the way the world is perceived by the average person, and attempts to instigate a change in this typical perception. This will be shot on both 16mm and 8mm
film and will be approximately 4 minutes in length. There will not be any dialogue, and sound will have a very industrial tone.
The second in the series (currently untitled) is about an OCD-ridden animator who decides that in order to cure his affliction once and for all, he is going to live one day absolutely perfect--no flaws, errors, or missteps at all. As his day progresses, little hiccups emerge in his plan which at first he tries to control, then frustrates him, and eventually drives him completely insane. The narrative aspect of this film will be driven by the animations that he creates over the day, going from little (but precise) napkin doodles in the morning, to the work he does at his job (which is slightly less precise) and then finally with the blood of his family in the end (hardly able to decipher the animation at all). I should note that this film will be extremely violent. It will most likely be shot on one of the Sony HDV cameras that the DML has, and should be roughly 7-9 minutes in length.
The final film in the series--and the most straightforward narrative of the bunch--is about a small-town police detective with an absolute sense of justice and honour that moves to a new town in order to "do some real good"; furthermore, his brother (who was a big-time drug dealer) was gunned down in a police chase in this very town, and he feels the need to make amends. His task, while in town, is to infiltrate the drug ring that his brother had operated and bring it down; however, his rigid definition of right and wrong ends up getting in the way of his job and he ends up taking his own life. This film will be shot on 16mm using an Arriflex camera, and should be 10-12 minutes in length. I am predicting that I will end up editing this one over Winter Break and debuting it next year.

I plan on shooting a 2-hour feature film written by a friend of mine. The script is complete and has been through six or seven revisions over the course of the summer. I have recruited some crew including a sound engineer, a cinematographer, a music composer, and a casting director. Casting is complete and we have recently started shooting. I hope to finish all of principal photography this semester but given the length of the project it is unlikely I will be able to get to any post before the end of the semester. I hope to have the project completed in full by March 2008.

Story follows a girl who becomes depressed and her life slowly wastes away sitting on her couch, watching TV, smoking, drinking, etc. She eventually gets expelled, has a dream, and she makes a change in her life. Or does she? Story is told from the point of view of the couch, as a narrator, although the audience doesn't realize that until significantly into the piece. Script is near completion, and looking for help all around, but lighting assistance specifically as well.
