A competitive screening of 10 short films voted on by professional judges and the audience. In accordance with the mission statement of the festival, the shorts represent a variety of tastes in style, technique, and genre.

This event is $5 and also features a FREE candy buffet to accompany the theme

Gretel Truong's thesis film, followed by a Q & A session.

The purpose of this special screening is to highlight and celebrate Gretel's contribution to the FilmMakers Society and student filmmaking as a whole during her four years at the University of Virginia.

Special Screening: The Stone Carvers

A special screening of Paul Wagner's Oscar and Emmy winning documentary, follwed by a Q & A session with the director. 1984; 30 minutes

A portrait of the Italian American artisans who carved the gargoyles and statues of the Washington Cathedral emphasizing their occupational lore and traditions; produced independently in cooperation with the S.I. Office of Folklife Programs, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the D.C. Community Humanities Council, and the Cafritz Foundation; Academy Award for Best Short Documentary, National Emmy Award for Best Documentary Director, national broadcast on PBS, Cine Golden Eagle, American Film Festival Blue Ribbon, Irish Silver Harp Award, Birmingham Educational Film Festival Best Independent Film, Flaherty Film Seminar, Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist (Washington, D.C.)

Kaleidoscope
Panel

As part of this year's Salmagundi Film Festival, the FilmMakers Society is hosting a special filmmaker panel. The panel will be held in Newcomb Hall's Kaleidoscope Room. It is free and open to students and the community at large.

Topics to be discussed are wide-ranging: from film as an art form to film as an industry, from film creation to film criticism, from working with film stock to working with digital video.

The guest panelists include: Erica Arvold (casting director); Temple Fennell (producer); Jeff Lowell (screenwriter and director); and Leslie McDonald (art director).

Please join us in celebrating these successful filmmakers.
